By Greg Bullough Of course once you calculate all your costs, you must calculate an offsetting cost: For many of us, flying is what keeps our heads screwed on straight.You know you're one of those if your wife/significant other/boss/colleagues have been known to say 'You really need to go flying. Please, go flying. Look, the weather out there is great. Go flying. For God's sake. Go flying, will ya?' Psychotherapy costs an average of $85.00/hour, for only a 50-minute hour. Figuring two, maybe three sessions per week you need to subtract $255.00 per week or $1020.00 per month from the cost of flying, based on not giving the money to some shrink so he can go fly HIS airplane. (And I was a psych major.) We won't even get into how much it costs for in-patient treatment, both in direct fees and lost wages and other indirect costs. Okay, I hear those of you who tell me that I can rent a 172 for a lot less than owning an Ercoupe. But to rent, you have to schedule in advance, and many of us have to go NOW in order to go sane again. Besides, a 172 is to airplanes as a bartender is to a real psychotherapist. Now an Ercoupe (or a J3, 7AC, C140, T-Craft or ANY BIPLANE), is what is needed to clear the brain and soothe the soul. In comparison to going 'round the bend, owning an Ercoupe is a "bargain the best I ever had '(nods to 'The Who').' As I get older, I'm finally getting smarter about these things :-) Don't postpone joy. |
