Replied by Larry Snyder on topic Winter oil temps
There are plans for a plate to cover the oil sump cooling inlet right below the prop. I have it on my plane now, but it only increases oil temp 10-15 degrees. But every little bit helps. Skyport used to sell it as a kit. Maybe Vernon Gregory has them now. I don’t know where my drawings are, I made the plate many years ago.

What should be the expected difference between oil temp and ambient temperature?
I’ve been showing about 140 oil temp with ambient aloft around 50-60F lately. Roughly, a 70-80 point spread.
I’ve heard 180 degrees is what you want but how do you do that in cold weather? If I get only 140 when the outside temp is 50, am I likely to get even less if the temp at altitude is really cold?

Do I need to duct tape the air intake?
