John, Thanks for the reference. Plenty of information to consider. I applaud all of the early adopters. I'll celebrate them all but stick with the Wright Brothers as my preference for First Flight. George

Gustave and his legacy have certainly contributed to the first flight discussion but:  Scientific American

Michael, Thanks for the info. I was not aware of Gustave Whitehead. Flying to the NC coast is for fun and close to friends and relatives. I have also read up on the Wright brothers. I'll have to see what is available on Whitehead. George

You should be heading to CT if you want real first flight. Gustave Whitehead beat the Wrights by years and flew miles, not a couple of hundred feet. Hope I haven't spoiled your plans and trip.

I doubt if I can make it, but be sure to check our Manteo on Roanoke Island. The Manteo airport is a 10 minute flight from First Flight airport. Roanoke Island is the site of the infamous Lost Colony. They have an outdoor theater where they put on a play every night about the Lost Colony. Very entertaining. In September they host a HUGE bluegrass festival using the ocean as a backdrop to the stage. That has been on my list for years. Maybe this year...
