That’s what I was thinking. No idea why someone would think it’s ok to dim the nav lights.

sounds like what they did was to tap into the nav light circuit to power the instrument lights, if the rheostat is bad, it could be causing a short. The nav light should never be dimmed, if they do, they no longer meet the specs for external light.

Hey all,
Would there be a valid reason to have a dimmer on the nav lights? I recently purchased my Ercoupe and the nav light circuit breaker keeps tripping. The previous owner covered the switch as inoperable until I fix it.
I noticed this rotary knob on the das, and it’s connected to the Nav light switch.
There can’t be a valid reason for this, right? I can see dimming interior lights or instrument lighting, but the nav lights?
You can see from the photos that is is connected to the nav lights.
