Frank,
I have only done this work on a c-85 so your engine may be different, but I *might* have an idea to pass along to your and your A&P.
before I know if it's relevant: Was your problem looseness between the spider & the engine block, or between the spider & the carburetor?

Once it’s all snugged down, I assume there is a way to check for leaks. The only other thing I’d worry about is your exhaust valves. An intake leak can cause it to run hot and burn a valve. Probably wouldn’t hurt to scope them and make sure they are not burned. Of course I’m all thumbs sitting here giving advice to an A&P…
But I DID burn an exhaust valve once because of a leaky intake tube.

Hi. As I am an A&P and a 1960 Forney Aircoupe owner since August of 2024, I decided to upgrade to the Real Gasket pushrod tube setup. I haven't gotten to it yet but during disassembly, I found the intake spider loose after taking the intake tubes off. You could grab the air cleaner housing and rattle it back and forth. The attaching nuts were safetied with proper cotter pins. My guess is that with time and vibration the mating surfaces had worn. I will disassemble and inspect and hope that just retightening will suffice. The takeaway is that this wasn't apparent during the prebuy I did on the plane with the intake tubes attached. So have your mechanic check this next oil change or sooner. Regards. Mike (brother to Frank who is my partner)
