My understanding is that UAT information is picked up by ground antennas and 1090ES is picked up by satellites. It’s easy to lose sight of a tower, but satellites are always up there! 978 UAT is only available in the USA because the FAA feared the large number of aircraft in our country could swamp the satellites. Since the TIS-B and FIS-B data were going to be broadcast by ground based towers, I guess that added 978 receivers on those towers to ease 1090 saturation.

I have a Garmin GDL 82 installed for ADSB Out. It only broadcasts at 978 UAT. Often FlighAware does not pick up my entire route, especially below 1,000 ft AGL. FlightAware blames it on the fact that I only broadcasting at 978 UAT.

However, my A&P/IA says that ADSB receivers are required to pick up both 978 and 1090 UAT.

Anyone have any insights into this issue?
