The Stromberg carb has a completely different mixture setup from the Marvel. You CANNOT shut the engine down with the mixture. I just turn the mags to OFF. For a while I would close the valve to the carb and wait for it to run out of gas, but that takes a while and really doesn't accomplish anything. When you shut off the engine with the mag switch, you know the P leads are good! If for some reason a P lead breaks, You can close the fuel valve to stop the engine, it just takes a little time. After that, be aware that you have a mag that's hot all the time!
There was a guy at our airport that tried to shut sown his Ercoupe with the mag switch and it kept running. I'm assuming the fuel valve was stuck (many are) and he couldn't get it off. What to do? He got a buck of fuel and threw it into the intake so the it flooded the engine and it quit. Now THAT'S not dangerous at all! Ha! This is why it's IMPORTANT that the fuel valve be functional. I stop the engine with the mag switch but then I turn off the fuel. If for some reason the needle sticks in the carb you won't be dumping the header tank onto the hangar floor!

No idle cutoff? +new owner question was created by Aaron Huffman
Hey all, I'm planning to buy an Ercoupe 415-C soon and there's a slight hold up with a possible mechanical issue with the carberator not able to lean the mixture out enough to shut down the engine as of the normal shut down routine I'm used to from the Cessna 172 models I've flown. The current owner has always had this "no idle cutoff" symptom and has been flying it around as-is perfectly fine. I've searched a few different keywords to find a topic on this on the forum without luck.
Another thing I'm wondering about is since mosaic is coming very soon, should I go ahead and push to get it upgraded to an E model for the higher GW with the full elevator movement, thoughts?
It's setup as a great VFR plane right now, and I plan on flying it for a while as such, but I'm looking to get my mind regularly around IFR. I've been looking to get it kitted out properly for IFR and am wondering if there's some tips out there? I was looking at the uAvionix av-20+av-30 + gns430w or 530w.

I'm curious if this is a known issue or if anyone else has dealt with it?
