I usually shut down with the magneto switches. That's serves to verify the magneto's aren't hot. I have a key on the magneto switch and I hang it on a hook at the top of the windshield so when I am fiddling around the propeller I can glance up, see the key, and know the magnetos are off. I also shut off the main fuel valve. I have the stromberg carb and it weeps if I don't shut off the valve. On the other hand, I had an instructor that said I should never turn off the valve for fear of forgetting to turn it on and losing power on take off (I have forgotten to turn the valve on and the engine quits long before I'm ready to take off). "Both Fuel valves on" is on my checklist....twice. On the prefilight walk about and on the engine start up. If you don't use the valves, exercise them once in a while to keep them loose and usable. Discovering a seized valve during an emergency would be frustrating. And, to point out the obvious, the entire airplane is 80 years old. It is better to use all of it rather than not touch it.

I’m the proud new owner of an Ercoupe with a  C-85. It’s quite different from the Cessnas I’ve flown before: no mixture control, no ignition key — just a master switch, and magneto switch, and two fuel valves that I’ve been advised not to touch since they’re original and about 80 years old. I couldn’t find a proper checklist for starting and shutting down order, i want to make sure I’m doing things right. Should I always close the fuel valve and let the engine run dry, or is it better to simply shut down with the mags after turning off the master? What’s considered the proper order of operations for start-up and shut-down on this setup?
