Pros/cons of painted vs polished aluminum?

I'm in the market for an Ercoupe, and I just love the classic polished aluminum look. From what I read, there are some issues to consider when contemplating a polished finish. I understand it's a lot of work to keep it polished, and paint actually provides some protection from the elements.

What other considerations are there? And is it feasible to strip the paint from a painted aircraft back to the bare aluminum?
